Parameter estimation and uncertainty analysis in hydrological modeling

Nowadays, mathematical models of hydrological systems are used routinely to guide decision making in diverse subjects, such as: environmental and risk assessments, design remediation strategies for contaminated sites, evaluation the impact climate change on water resources. The correct development use them is relevant beyond realm hydrology. continuous improvement computational power data collection leading increasingly complex models, which integrate multiple coupled physical processes achieve a better representation modeled system. Most parameters included difficult measure directly, so they must be estimated from collected through calibration procedure. Furthermore, when make forecasts about future or hypothetical scenarios, it important bound uncertainty their results. Therefore, application systematic approaches parameter estimation, sensitivity, analysis quantify potential errors, more necessary now than was past. Even though methodological frameworks these purposes exist, have had slow adoption due high cost required technical knowledge apply them. We analyze existing methodologies, discuss remaining challenges, present survey emerging trends estimation modeling.
